rt-clip privacy policy
Last updated November 6, 2026
rt-clip is a clipboard history app for Windows and macOS. This policy explains what data it handles, where that data goes, and how you control it. The short version: your clipboard history stays on your computers and, if you turn on sync, in your own Google Drive in encrypted form. We do not run servers that receive your data, and the app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking.
Data stored on your computer
- rt-clip records what you copy: text (including its formatted versions), images and lists of copied files. This history is stored in the app's data folder on your computer, protected by your operating system account.
- Content that password managers and other apps mark as sensitive is not recorded. You can pause recording, delete single items or clear your history at any time from the app.
- The app keeps a local log of errors for troubleshooting. It does not write your clipboard content to the log.
Optional sync through Google Drive
Sync is off until you sign in with Google in the app's settings. When you turn it on, rt-clip requests one permission, drive.appdata. This lets it store and read its own files in a hidden app folder in your Google Drive. It cannot see, open or change any of your other Drive files.
- Before anything is uploaded, it is encrypted on your computer with a key derived from a passphrase you choose. The passphrase never leaves your computer. Without it, the synced files cannot be read by anyone, including us and Google.
- File names are derived from the same key and reveal nothing about their contents. Google can still see how many files there are, how large they are and when they change.
- Your Google sign-in token and the sync key are stored in your operating system's credential store (Windows Credential Manager or the macOS Keychain).
- rt-clip only communicates with Google's sign-in and Google Drive services. Your data is transferred directly between your computer and your Google Drive.
How Google user data is used
rt-clip uses access to your Google Drive only to sync your own clipboard history between your own computers. The data is not sold, not used for advertising, not used to train AI models, and not shared with anyone. rt-clip's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Removing your data
- Delete cloud data in the app's settings removes every rt-clip file from your Google Drive.
- Disconnect removes the sign-in token and sync key from that computer. To revoke rt-clip's access entirely, remove it at your Google Account permissions.
- Uninstalling the app and deleting its data folder removes the local history. The data folder is
%APPDATA%\dev.rtobo.rt-clipon Windows and~/Library/Application Support/dev.rtobo.rt-clipon macOS.
